Money Diary: 12th February – 18th February

Throughout 2018, I will be tracking every last penny I spend, and sharing it here weekly. I’m a (late) twenty-something lady, living in the North of England with my Other Half, commonly referred to as OH. I travel regularly for work, and often spend more time on the motorway than in my own home, which can often account for my fluctuating Car Expenses and entirely random Grocery costs!  By the end of the year, I’m hoping to have a better overview of where my money goes to each month, and have a realistic retirement savings plan in place (as well as the many other savings plans I have in my head, but you can read more about that here). You can also read the full series (so far) of my money diaries here. I’ve built myself a personal money tracker spreadsheet, I am armed with my bank statements, a weekly budget worksheet and a monthly budget worksheet and I am ready to rock!*!

What a week! I feel like I have barely had a chance to sit down! Work has been pretty crazy, I’ve been travelling lots, working on several different events, long days and even longer nights!

Usually, weeks like this don’t really allow me to spend a lot of money, however, a couple of hiccups this week have bumped up my total…

The Breakdown:

Bills: £44.79 – I am pretty fuming with myself on this one. 79p is my iCloud storage, that’s cool. £44, however, is a toll bridge fine. I crossed the new Mersey Gateway Bridge near Liverpool a few weeks back for work. They have a rather odd online payment system and to be perfectly honest, by the time I reached my end destination, I totally forgot about paying it. So, so annoyed! I also wasn’t fully sure what category to include this in, it’s not really a Car Expense, as I won’t be able to claim back my own forgetfulness from work!

Groceries: £0 – I’ve spent 4 days travelling with work this week, and spent 20 hours working on a loooong event on Saturday, so I really haven’t bought any food for home! Sundays Big Shop was also written off in favour of sitting on my sofa and eating the random bits of non-meals we had in the fridge. OH has picked up his own bits and pieces through the week, but a shopping trip is well and truly overdue!

Expenses/Car Expenses: £160.76 – A few (cheap) hotel nights and a half fill of diesel. Will be returned next month with my salary.

Lunch: £19.04 – Some of this should definitely be in my Expenses category, however, as per usual, I have lost several receipts so am unable to claim. Nothing fancy included, mostly packaged sandwiches running between events!

Entertainment: £21.30 – a few drinks catching up with friends while travelling. Working in events means I meet people from all over the country/world, so generally, no matter where I travel to, I know someone living nearby!

Clothes: £0 – Still haven’t replaced my jeans…

Toiletries: £48.88 – A big one this week, I realised I was running low on a few day to day things, so this includes a stash of shampoo/conditioner/shower gel/deodorant/toothpaste/toothbrushes/make up remover as well as a couple of hair dye kits. I have super long, thick hair so can often use 2-3 of these when dying my hair, doesn’t work out so much the cheaper option when you can’t get away with one box!

Takeaways: £13 – I treated myself & OH to fish & chips on Friday night between long working stints. No regrets.

Misc: £0

Total: £307.77

To be Returned on Expenses: £160.76

Actual Spends: £147.01

I’m actually not too displeased with this. WIth the exception of my infuriating fine, most of my money has been spent on work, which will be repaid! The Boots splurge was required, and will mean that I’ll not be spending any more in that category for a few weeks at least.

OH has also been tracking his spending dutifully, so in the next few weeks I’m going to try and figure out our joint spends, the likes of groceries and household bits. This should help me plan our budgets a bit better overall, and we’re going to start using one joint credit card for these expenses in the near future, which will make it easier again to keep an eye on.

I feel like I have spent more this week than I actually have though, I have currently got a basket full saved on the Topshop website. I desperately need new jeans but just haven’t had the time to get to town. I will be purchasing today for sure!
