Money Diaries: September 17th – 23rd

Throughout 2018, I will be tracking every last penny I spend, and sharing it here weekly. I’m a (late) twenty-something lady, living in the North of England with my Other Half, commonly referred to as OH.

I travel regularly for work, and often spend more time on the motorway than in my own home, which can often account for my fluctuating Car Expenses and entirely random Grocery costs!  By the end of the year, I’m hoping to have a better overview of where my money goes to each month, and have a realistic long term savings plan in place (as well as the many other savings plans I have in my head, but you can read more about that here). You can also read the full series of my money diaries here.

Another busy week has just flown by, I seriously can’t believe how close we are to the end of the year (and also to my Blog Birthday!)

I had a couple of days off work at the beginning of the week, I flew back form Ireland on Monday night and had booked in Tuesday as an extra holiday day. I tend to get to this time of year every year and realise I’ve taken almost none of my holiday entitlement, then spend the next 3 months trying to arrange days off here and there!

In the summertime, when most people are taking their holidays, I am just too busy! In some ways, this works quite nicely, as it means that when I do take a trip away, I have generally got to go during off season, April or September/October. At least I can be a bit smug about that…

After that, I had to play catch up and put in some extra hours at work, so overall, it’s been a pretty dull week spent comparing supplier prices, stressing out over wifi and seemingly never reaching the end of my inbox.

On Saturday, I was on the judging panel for a local music award, it’s something I’ve been involved with for a few years now and I absolutely love doing it. I started my career working in the local music scene and without even really noticing it happen, as I progressed and started working with bigger acts, I lost touch with what was happening on the ground.

When I was asked to be a judge the first year, I jumped at the chance. While I like to think I am genuinely helping out young bands and giving them a platform to launch, I also just really enjoy getting stuck into some new music!

I seem to remember, only very recently, talking about how content I was and how things had slowed down a bit after a pretty hectic summer…

That changed pretty quickly!

I’m sad to report that a close friend and colleague of mine passed away suddenly last week. This has come as a total shock to all of us, he was a fit & healthy 38 year old who offered his girlfriend a morning coffee in bed and never came back.

As well as the obvious grief which has taken over, I worked particularly closely with him, so have had to pick up a lot of his workload to get us by.

I had booked a trip home to Ireland a couple of weeks ago to celebrate my Grandmothers birthday, but after hearing the news, I was undecided on going. I decided last minute that there was no point in sitting around and hopped on the flight with scant regard for what I had actually packed for 5 days away from home.

I had a great weekend full of celebrations with friends and family, and in the process, managed to spend surprisingly little (except for having to buy some emergency clothes!)

This has been a week full of “spring” (Autumn?) cleaning and visiting friends! I’ve managed to get rid of 2 full bags of clothes/shoes/coats and have even taken them to the charity shop already. This is my biggest accomplishment! I am pretty good at doing the clear out bit, but usually I end up with several bags of clothes stacked by my front door for weeks on end!

I also took the weekend to visit some friends in the Lake District, which is one of my favourite places on earth! I don’t get to see my friends here as often as I would like to, but when we do get to catch up, it’s like we were never apart. I first met them when I was in university and we lived next door. The 3 of us were pretty much inseparable for the next 3 years! Unfortunately, life got in the way and they both ended up moving to the Lakes for work.

A wonderful weekend was had by all, we checked out a local band and braved the Cumbrian weather for a hike up a mountain which I cannot remember the name of…

They are also currently saving for their wedding, which meant everyone was chasing a cheap and cheerful time. We banded together and cooked up a storm on Friday night, which provided lots and lots of leftovers for our hungover Saturday mountain climb!
