Money Diaries: October 29th – November 4th

Throughout 2018, I will be tracking every last penny I spend, and sharing it here weekly. I’m a (late) twenty-something lady, living in the North of England with my Other Half, commonly referred to as OH. I travel regularly for work, and often spend more time on the motorway than in my own home, which can often account for my fluctuating Car Expenses and entirely random Grocery costs!  By the end of the year, I’m hoping to have a better overview of where my money goes to each month, and have a realistic long term savings plan in place (as well as the many other savings plans I have in my head, but you can read more about that here). You can also read the full series of my money diaries here.

After a week full of meetings, events and signing not just one, but two new artist deals, I’m finally getting some down time to get my life-admin up to scratch.

I’d thought the past week was a pretty well behaved week in terms of my spending, but it turns out you actually can work 80 hour weeks and still spend a small fortune!

While it feels like I’ve done loads, looking back, it’s actually been a pretty quiet week. My aunt who lives about 2 hours from me has been ill so I took my little cousin for a night to give her a rest, so had a day spent playing Mum, but aside from that, it’s been work work work.

Is anyone else totally freaking out over how close we are to the end of this year?!

I mean, we have Halloween right around the corner, and after that, it’s basically Christmas!

I’ve been thinking about this looming as I’ve been having a terrible time with my money recently. It’s not that I am spending loads on silly things, I’m more anticipating having to spend loads on very necessary things! After almost a year of keeping myself on track with savings targets, I’m kind of letting myself down in the final few months.

The do say, when it rains, it pours. I can attest to that. This time last year, my car broke down, shortly followed by both my boiler and my oven completely packing it in. It was an expensive few weeks! This year, I’m on the verge of spending more money on dental care than I ever have before, potentially needing to replace two windows in my apartment, and definitely need to replace the radiator in my bathroom.

So when I haven’t been dribbling my way through poorly planned meetings (immediately after having my mouth numbed!) or counting up how many lunches I’m allowed per day, I have been just looking at my online bank accounts. Just looking.

Like when you’re hungry but there’s nothing to eat and you open the fridge 6 times expecting that maybe you missed something tasty the first time?

Here’s where I’ve been spending my metaphorical fridge goodies this week…

You know the saying “blink and you’ll miss it”?

That’s how I feel this week has gone.

One minute, I was moaning about Monday morning, and the next,I was moaning about Monday morning again.

It’s been a pretty packed week, I’ve been out for dinner with a friend to celebrate her new job, sadly attended the funeral of a close colleague, had about 4 billion meetings with new clients and finally spent the weekend enjoying* the Giant Spectacular in Liverpool.

(*squirming uncomfortably since I am terrified of puppets while desperately trying to have fun at this amazing event! Gin helped.)

After all of this, I’m surprised to see my total spends! Here’s how I got on…

Isn’t it amazing how quickly plans can change? My nice quiet chilled out weekend disappeared swiftly on Friday afternoon when a friend landed his zoo on me for pet-sitting duties.

So I spent my weekend hanging out with his two absolutely gooorgeous huskies, two rabbits and a cat. While it was very enjoyable, it was certainly not relaxing!

On the plus side, it did mean I was unable to go shopping, which had been pretty much my only plan for the weekend. I thought I was in need of a new winter coat, but having dug my old one out of the cupboard, it is like new! I don’t need to buy a new one at all!

I do still seem to have spent a lot of money though and I’m not really sure how? I can’t even blame it on my expenses this week!

Another busy week has just flown by, I seriously can’t believe how close we are to the end of the year (and also to my Blog Birthday!)

I had a couple of days off work at the beginning of the week, I flew back form Ireland on Monday night and had booked in Tuesday as an extra holiday day. I tend to get to this time of year every year and realise I’ve taken almost none of my holiday entitlement, then spend the next 3 months trying to arrange days off here and there!

In the summertime, when most people are taking their holidays, I am just too busy! In some ways, this works quite nicely, as it means that when I do take a trip away, I have generally got to go during off season, April or September/October. At least I can be a bit smug about that…

After that, I had to play catch up and put in some extra hours at work, so overall, it’s been a pretty dull week spent comparing supplier prices, stressing out over wifi and seemingly never reaching the end of my inbox.

On Saturday, I was on the judging panel for a local music award, it’s something I’ve been involved with for a few years now and I absolutely love doing it. I started my career working in the local music scene and without even really noticing it happen, as I progressed and started working with bigger acts, I lost touch with what was happening on the ground.

When I was asked to be a judge the first year, I jumped at the chance. While I like to think I am genuinely helping out young bands and giving them a platform to launch, I also just really enjoy getting stuck into some new music!
