Money Diaries: November 26th – December 2nd

Throughout 2018, I will be tracking every last penny I spend, and sharing it here weekly. I’m a (late) twenty-something lady, living in the North of England with my Other Half, commonly referred to as OH. I travel regularly for work, and often spend more time on the motorway than in my own home, which can often account for my fluctuating Car Expenses and entirely random Grocery costs!  By the end of the year, I’m hoping to have a better overview of where my money goes to each month, and have a realistic long term savings plan in place (as well as the many other savings plans I have in my head, but you can read more about that here). You can also read the full series of my money diaries here.

Last week, I promised you two Money Diaries posts as I’d missed one while I was ill. As I looked over my spending tracker for the week, I realised that there was a really good chance it was going to be the single dullest piece of writing I would ever produce.

I summed it up in a tweet instead:

I’m back in action this week and am probably feeling around 90% myself again, so that’s good enough for me! I was luckily able to work from home again for a few days this week so getting the extra rest and not trekking to the office in the cold is definitely helping.

I had another generally quiet week, work is crazy busy at the minute with lots of things to close off before Christmas, so I’ve been enjoying not doing much in the evenings and just relaxing!

Despite this, it has managed to be my most expensive week of the year so far.

I watched my first Christmas film and had a peppermint hot chocolate. Then I promptly spend about £500 online on Christmas presents.

This week, I’ve had a well needed break from work. You might be expecting this to be a more exciting money diary than it actually is, so I apologise in advance!

OH was unable to get the same time off as me, so I didn’t manage to go away anywhere, although that’s probably for the best really. I’ve been so busy with work recently, I have totally neglected my apartment and general Life Admin.

So it’s mostly been a week of arranging my finances, having my boiler serviced, fixing my broken apartment and the much dreaded dentist visit. The last time I had a local anesthetic, it made me feel quite ill when it was wearing off, so I thought it best to plan in this appointment for when I didn’t have to go straight to work afterwards.

I did manage to squeeze in some fun with friends amongst all of the boring bits, and I’m pretty happy with how little I spent doing it. The perks of my job include free gig tickets to most events I would want to go to across the country, so I like to take advantage when I have the time. The downside being that because I work so many night and weekends, it’s actually usually my friends and family who benefit from this perk!

After a week full of meetings, events and signing not just one, but two new artist deals, I’m finally getting some down time to get my life-admin up to scratch.

I’d thought the past week was a pretty well behaved week in terms of my spending, but it turns out you actually can work 80 hour weeks and still spend a small fortune!

While it feels like I’ve done loads, looking back, it’s actually been a pretty quiet week. My aunt who lives about 2 hours from me has been ill so I took my little cousin for a night to give her a rest, so had a day spent playing Mum, but aside from that, it’s been work work work.

Is anyone else totally freaking out over how close we are to the end of this year?!

I mean, we have Halloween right around the corner, and after that, it’s basically Christmas!

I’ve been thinking about this looming as I’ve been having a terrible time with my money recently. It’s not that I am spending loads on silly things, I’m more anticipating having to spend loads on very necessary things! After almost a year of keeping myself on track with savings targets, I’m kind of letting myself down in the final few months.

The do say, when it rains, it pours. I can attest to that. This time last year, my car broke down, shortly followed by both my boiler and my oven completely packing it in. It was an expensive few weeks! This year, I’m on the verge of spending more money on dental care than I ever have before, potentially needing to replace two windows in my apartment, and definitely need to replace the radiator in my bathroom.

So when I haven’t been dribbling my way through poorly planned meetings (immediately after having my mouth numbed!) or counting up how many lunches I’m allowed per day, I have been just looking at my online bank accounts. Just looking.

Like when you’re hungry but there’s nothing to eat and you open the fridge 6 times expecting that maybe you missed something tasty the first time?

Here’s where I’ve been spending my metaphorical fridge goodies this week…

You know the saying “blink and you’ll miss it”?

That’s how I feel this week has gone.

One minute, I was moaning about Monday morning, and the next,I was moaning about Monday morning again.

It’s been a pretty packed week, I’ve been out for dinner with a friend to celebrate her new job, sadly attended the funeral of a close colleague, had about 4 billion meetings with new clients and finally spent the weekend enjoying* the Giant Spectacular in Liverpool.

(*squirming uncomfortably since I am terrified of puppets while desperately trying to have fun at this amazing event! Gin helped.)

After all of this, I’m surprised to see my total spends! Here’s how I got on…
